At least 44 people were killed in a stampede at a religious festival in Israel on Friday (April 30th). Emergency services are conducting rescue operations.
According to the media, the accident took place at a religious festival called Lag B’omer at the foot of Mount Maron. The religious festival was closed last year due to coronavirus restrictions. However, this year the festival was organized due to the successful conduct of vaccination activities and the control of corona.
It was a big crowd since the beginning of the Corona epidemic. At first, it seemed that the incident took place when a part of the stadium collapsed at the festival site. But the Emergency Services Department later said there had been incidents of trampling.
A spokesman for Israel’s rescue service told AFP that 36 people had died on the spot. Besides, several people died in the hospital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a “major disaster” and said he was “praying for the injured.”
