Facebook’s initial victory in the court of Bangladesh

The court has banned the use of the domain opened in the name of Facebook from Bangladesh. The court banned the use of the Facebook.com.bd domain until further orders. As a result, it’s Facebook’s initial victory in the court of Bangladesh.

Dhaka District Judge Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury passed the order on Monday (December 14th).

Earlier, Facebook has filed a lawsuit against a man named SK Shamsul Alam seeking 50,000 USD (Tk 44 lakh BDT) in compensation for allocating a domain called Facebook.com.bd. Lawyer Mokshedul Islam appeared in the court on behalf of Facebook. Following the hearing, the court imposed an interim ban on the domain name Facebook.com.bd allotted from BTCL.

On November 22, Facebook filed a case in the Dhaka District Judge’s Court under Sections 96 and 98 of the Trademark Act and Section 151 of the Criminal Code. At the same time, a permanent ban on the domain was sought.

According to the statement of the case, a Bangladeshi company called ‘A One Software Limited’ registered a domain called ‘Facebook.com.bd’. The domain will be sold for 6 million USD, according to Facebook authorities. Facebook authorities then sent a notice to BTCL and related organizations to stop it. As they did not listen to the notice, Facebook approached the court.
