Welthungerhilfe to provide 100,000 Euro for COVID-19 and Amphan effected India

After Cyclone Amphan left devastating destruction across the Indian state of West Bengal, Wealthungerhilf is providing 100,000 euros in immediate assistance to the affected people in the Sundarbans region in India.

In these rural coastal areas in the Sundarbans region, many houses collapsed to the ground, waterlogging broke, and fields were flooded by seawater. Subsequent crops have been almost completely destroyed. Welthungerhilfe took the immediate initiative to help these people in need.

Welthungerhilfe Country Director in India, Nivedita Varshneya said.“It is a disaster that people have lost their homes and their livelihoods due to the cyclone. In times of Covid-19, the situation is even more dramatic: Many day laborers, who in any case live hand to mouth, and who have lost their jobs and incomes due to the Coronavirus pandemic, returned from the cities to their home villages. There they are now experiencing a double disaster of a cyclone and Covid-19.”

Together with partner Wealthungerhilf is providing rapid emergency assistance to 10,000 families. About 60,000 people are being provided with food, drinking water, and hygienic sets. Although many homes have been destroyed by the cyclone, people are still living there for fear of the coronavirus. For this reason, protective canvas and tents are also being provided for them.
