A virtual session of the WHO on corona amidst US-China hostility

The World Health Organization (WHO) is starting a two-day virtual session on Monday, but fears abound that US-China tensions could derail the strong action.

However, there is hope for a resolution based on the consensus of the member countries. This is the first virtual session of the WHO.

The World Health Organization (WHO) sessions are usually three weeks long. But this time there is a two-day virtual session just to discuss coronavirus. Coronavirus has infected 4.7 million people worldwide and killed 310K people. Some heads of state, heads of government, health ministers and other top leaders are joining the session.

Last Friday, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gebreasus said the conference was going to be one of the most important since the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948.

Conflicts between the world’s two largest economies are threatening to reach an agreement on global action to address the current situation at the conference, the report said.

Last week, US President Donald Trump called for severance of ties with China. Trump has been critical of its role since the coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China, last year.
