The Afghan president has agreed to share power

President Ashraf Ghani has signed a power-sharing deal with his opposition leader Abdullah Abdullah. The agreement was reached to end the months-long political stalemate.

A spokesman for the president, Sedik Siddiqui, confirmed it on Sunday. In a tweet, he stated that a political agreement has just been signed between President Gani and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.

Abdullah will lead peace talks with Taliban militants, the spokesman was quoted as saying. Other members of his party will be included in the cabinet. However, it was not immediately clear which cabinet posts they (members) would get.

The agreement is expected to remove obstacles to efforts to end the country’s long-running war. The Election Commission announced the victory of President Ashraf Ghani in February, five months after a bitter debate over the outcome of Afghanistan’s presidential election.
