Indonesia starts rice ATMs amid corona crunch

The COVID-19 pandemic has left millions of Indonesians striving to make ends meet. Now the related authorities are rolling out “rice ATMs” in a bid to ensure more exceptional access for those in need of the essential Asian staple.

The rice dispensaries around Jakarta is part of a government action to support those meanest affected by the coronavirus outbreak, which has caused millions to lose their jobs in Indonesia.

This Rice ATMs are stacked with good-quality rice and run by magnetic cards. The tall automated teller machines look much like normal Cash ATM points, the only difference is that they pump out grain instead of banknotes.

“Each day we prepare 1.5 tonnes of rice for around 1,000 residents In Jakarta,” stated Ibrahim, who is an army official managing the distribution part. “We will continue doing it every day, without rest, even on weekends, we will distribute non-stop”, He added.

Indonesia has declared a $25 billion stimulus package in March in response to the coronavirus outbreak, promising to provide social welfare for at list 10 million families, including food aid and electricity charge decreases.
