French police seized 140,000 face masks destined for sale on the black market

140,000 face masks have been seized by French Police, destined to be sold on the black market.

A businessman unloading the masks from a truck into a house in St Denis, north of Paris has been caught, officers said.

Last month, France confiscated all stocks and production of face masks to equip health workers.

In the meantime, in China, the authorities have confiscated 89m poor quality face masks. The country has faced vilification over poor quality exports.

Officials had examined nearly 16 million businesses and had also seized a great amount of in-efficacious disinfectant, government official Gan Lin said.

The prices of masks online and in shops in France had tripled before all stocks were requisitioned.

The seized masks included 5,000 high specification (FFP2) masks to be used with coronavirus patients. approximately a third were surgical masks.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, the accused persons included a 60-year-old man, reportedly the vendor who had bought the masks for €0.50 ($0.54; £0.44) each within the Kingdom of Netherlands. He was selling them for between €0.55-€0.60.

A second accused was a 46-year-old who was allegedly near to buy a number of the stock to sell on.

There are several seizures of masks within the Paris region since the pandemic began, including 29,000 masks found in Aubervilliers and 32,000 masks sezied in Saint-Ouen, both to the north of Paris.

The country has seen 160,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and 22,600 deaths.
