Renowned Filmmaker Amjad Hossain dies at 76

Renowned Bangladeshi film director and actor Amjad Hossain passed away at a Bangkok hospital on Friday afternoon. He was 76.

He breathed his last at Bumrungrad International Hospital around 3 pm, said his son Sazzad Hossain Dodul.

President Abdul Hamid on Friday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of prominent film director Amjad Hossain. Amjad Hossain received Ekushey Padak in 1992 for his lifelong contribution to the film industry. In a condolence message, the President prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

He was taken to Bangkok on November 28 on a private jet plane, according to his son Shazzad Hossain Dodul’s Facebook post. Both Dodul and another son, Sohel Arman, accompanied him.

The veteran director was admitted to the intensive care unit of Dhaka’s Impulse Hospital and was on a life support after suffering a stroke at his residence on November 18. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took care of the expenditure of Amjad’s treatment.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor also expressed shock at the death of the prominent film director.

Films directed by Amjad Hossain included “Golapi Ekhon Traine (1978),” “Sundori (1979),” “Koshai (1980),” “Jonmo Theke Jolchi (1982),” “Bhat Dey (1984)”, “Golapi Ekhon Dhakay (2006)” and “Golapi Ekhon Bilatey (2010).”
