Renowned Bangladeshi photographer Anwar Hossain dies

Renowned Bangladeshi photographer Anwar Hossain was found dead at the Hotel Olio Dream Heaven on Panthapath, Dhaka.

The legendary 70-year-old photographer lived in Paris with his family and was visiting Bangladesh as he had been invited to sit on the judges’ panel for a photography competition, reports Dhaka Tribune.

However, details on the cause and time of his death are yet to be revealed.

Olio Dream Heaven General Manager Sohel Haider Khan Jashim said: “Two guests came to meet Anwar Hossain at around 7:30 am. For three hours, hotel staff repeatedly called him on the intercom and also knocked on his room’s door. When there was no response, we called the police.”

His body was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. After news of Anwar’s death spread, his friends, colleagues, and students immediately rushed to the hotel. According to the hotel register, Anwar had checked in on November 28.

Anwar Hossain was born in Old Dhaka in 1948. He earned his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Armanitola Government High School in 1965. Two years later he graduated from Notre Dame College, Dhaka. He graduated in architecture from BUET and received higher degree in film from Pune University.

Hossain authored a number of books on photography. His photography captured the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Hossain has won more than 60 international awards in photography. He was the cinematographer of the film Shyamol Chhaya directed by Humayun Ahmed. Hossain also filmed 15 fictions and 30 documentary films. He Came in cinematography with the first film of sheikh niyamat Ali’Surya dighal Bari.
