The International forums must take responsibility of tackling the adverse impact of climate change, especially when it affects the rural girls and women.
State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki said this at a sideline event in New York, organized by Bangladesh Permanent Mission titled “Shouldering the Burden: Rural Women and Climate-Induced Displacement.”
Earlier addressing the 62nd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), Chumki lauded the present government’s various steps and strong promises along with all-out measures to face the adverse impact of climate change in Bangladesh.
“The government has undertaken many projects like ‘Ashrayan’ and ‘One House One Farm’ (Ekti Bari Ekti Khamar) to rehabilitate the climate change affected people,” she said.
The state minister said the government has been providing training and building awareness programmes to bring climate change affected people to normal life, according a message received here from New York.
She said her ministry is also implementing projects aimed at ensuring safe sanitation and drinking water under social safety net programme.
UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka praised the Bangladesh government for providing human assistance to the displaced Rohingyas.
She recently visited Bangladesh to see for herself the state of poor Rohingya refugees in their camps in Cox’s Bazar district.
Regarding the Rphingya issue, Chumki said the global leaders recognized Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the Mother of Humanity for her generous role in providing shelters to these displaced people.

The session focused on the theme, “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.”
