India has opened two new immigration check posts along its border with Bangladesh and Myanmar, according to several official notifications released by its government.
A report by The Hindu states that the Indian home ministry, in a gazette notification, said its central government has selected Kawrpuichhuah land check post in Mizoram’s Lunglei district as an official check posts for passengers from Bangladesh to enter and/or exit India with valid travel documents. Kawarpuchiah is located along a riverine border with Bangladesh.
In another notification, the ministry said Zorinpui land check post in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district has been designated as authorised for all passengers from Myanmar with the same stipulation that they carry valid travel documents.
The Indian government has also designated Zorinpui as a new land custom station along the Indo-Myanmar border for the Kaladan multi-modal project, the Hindu reports. Zorinpui lies in a remote area, 287km away from Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
An agreement on Zorinpui was part of the joint statement issued during former Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh’s, visit to Myanmar in May 2012.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a two-day state visit to Myanmar from September 5, the first bilateral visit to the neighbouring country.
India and Myanmar share a 1,643-km-long border that touches Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
India’s 4,096-km-long border with Bangladesh touches West Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam.
