The World Food Programme (WFP) in Mauritania welcomes vital contributions worth US$5 million from the governments of Germany, Japan, the European Union (ECHO), France, Spain, and Monaco, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The money will help WFP provide cash and food transfers to some 77,000 Mauritanians during the peak of the lean season and throughout September, and improve nutrition and livelihoods in four of six regions where hunger and malnutrition are at the highest levels in the country: Assaba, Gorgol, Guidimakha and Hodh ech-Charghi.
“We are grateful for the timely support received from our partners for WFP’s lean season response”, said Jean-Noel Gentile, WFP Country Director for Mauritania. “This will also allow us to pilot longer-term solutions for those Mauritanians who experience seasonal malnutrition above emergency thresholds, and who suffer from recurrent food crises caused by shocks spanning the entire Sahel”.
All six governments, as well as the EU, are long-standing WFP partners in Mauritania. The latest contributions confirm their commitment to the well-being and long-term resilience of some of Mauritania’s most vulnerable.
