As a part of National Fish Week 2016, the Department of Fisheries of Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock organized five-day long Fishin Dhaka from 21-25 July, 2016. Fish fair gives audience a platform where they can get information on what are the new science or trend and a good overview of the fish industry. It also presents a concentrated display of machines and technical aids and appliances for traders and businessmen. In addition, it shows a broad spectrum of several scientific concepts for fish farming as well.
This year, WorldFish is participating at the fair with a focus on showcasing its USAID funded Aquaculture for Income and Nutrition (AIN) and Enhanced Coastal Fisheries projects.
In the fair, the USAID AIN project participated and showcased the development and dissemination of improved fish seed, improved household and commercial aquaculture, and policy reform and institutional capacity building issues to wider audiences. Therefore, ECOFISHBD project in its stall manifested how the project is assisting to strengthen the ability of local communities, especially women through Alternative Income Generating Activities (AIGA), and can contribute in hilsa conservation.
This is to mention here that, the unique design of two WorldFish booths were also innovative in sharing ideas and information. Booths were well decorated and continuously projected its research results in the screen. In addition, ECOFISHBD booth arranged ‘quiz contest’ twice a day, which attracted huge crowd for winning the ‘100 Recipes of Hilsa’ book. On the other hand, USAID AIN in their booth, showing of all the training materials and opportunities and more than 1400 people registered to obtain them through email. AIN also disseminating information on mStar (mobile money), Rohu Genetic Improvement, Tilapia hatchery, SPF Shrimp and e-traceability research activities.
Thousand visitors from research institute, students, representatives from fisheries sector, Govt. officials visited daily at our two well decorated stalls and took the opportunity for getting information, networking and discussion. Around 50 exhibitors from several national and international organizations and research institute showcased their products in the areas of fish production and processing, fresh fish and delicacies, as well as research outputs and development in recent Fish Week 2016.
WorldFish, is always working to change of the lives of millions who depend on fish. Likewise, with the continuous support from USAID Dhaka office and department of Fisheries, WorldFish, through its two ongoing projects, i.e., USAID AIN and ECOFISHBD, inspiring the farmers, providing them with latest scientific technologies and educating them in producing quality fingerlings so that they cultivate fish more and also supporting the country’s coastal fishermen and their families to improve food security through research-led fisheries management initiatives.
