Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani today paid a courtesy call on Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram at the latter’s office here.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said future joint progress of Bangladesh and Algeria will be accelerated based on the strong foundation of people-to-people contact and cultural ties between the two nations.
“The Algerian government’s support for Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman during the 81 session of the United Nations General Assembly has further rejuvenated the ongoing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Algeria,” he said.
The Speaker said, during the 16-year rule of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, democracy was endangered. Through suppressing opposition parties and extrajudicial killings, a reign of terror was established.
“The sacrifices of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during this prolonged period of restoring democracy are unforgettable in history. In the most recent national parliamentary election, the people of Bangladesh regained their democratic rights by exercising their franchise,” he added.
The Algerian Ambassador remarked that the Algerian government and people have greatly appreciated the recent free and fair national parliamentary election held in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on sports, technical assistance, the shipbuilding industry, garment exports, educational cooperation and energy between the two countries.
The Speaker emphasized the formation of a parliamentary friendship group with Algeria, the establishment of strong diplomatic relations, and the exchange of visits of parliamentary delegations.
Members of the Algerian embassy delegation and relevant senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
