As the White House indicated that it will not be restrained by a congressional deadline on the Iran conflict, Tehran’s air defenses were triggered late Thursday to fight small planes and drones.
Air defense systems were heard in some areas of the Iranian capital “to counter small aircraft and reconnaissance drones” for around 20 minutes, according to the Tasnim and Fars news agencies, but everything had returned to “normal” after that.
A confrontation between the White House and Congress was imminent as US President Donald Trump’s administration had to obtain congressional approval for the war against Iran by midnight.
The Trump administration claimed that a truce declared last month essentially halted the 60-day window for requesting authorization.
“For War Powers Resolution purposes, the hostilities that began on Saturday, February 28 have terminated,” a senior administration official told AFP late on Thursday, noting that there has been no exchange of fire between the United States and Iran since the April 7 ceasefire.
