Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister of Sweden, denounced on Saturday the threat made by US President Donald Trump to impose heavy tariffs on European countries if they refused to allow him to purchase Greenland.
“We won’t let ourselves be intimidated,” he said in a message sent to AFP. “Only Denmark and Greenland decide questions that concern them.
“I will always defend my country and our allied neighbours,” he added, stressing that this was “a European question.
“Sweden is currently having intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway and the United Kingdom to find a joint response,” he added.
On Saturday, US President Donald Trump intensified his pursuit of Greenland, threatening several European countries with tariffs of up to 25% until the Danish island was acquired.
As hundreds of people demonstrated in Greenland’s capital against his desire to purchase the mineral-rich island at the Arctic’s entrance, he made threats.
In Copenhagen and other Danish cities, thousands more people staged protests.
