The European Union has applauded the interim government’s amendment of the Bangladesh Labour Act, describing it as a critical step toward more robust labor rights and necessary to maintain Bangladesh’s long-term preferential access to the EU market.
The EU delegation in Dhaka stated today that the reform is crucial as Bangladesh gets ready for early 2026 general elections, emphasizing the necessity for efficient implementation and policy continuity.
It further stated that the modification would be anticipated to be promptly confirmed by the party or coalition that forms the next administration following the elections.
Bangladesh’s ratification of ILO Conventions 155, 187, and 190, which reinforce obligations to health, safety, and the eradication of workplace violence and harassment, was also welcomed by the EU.
The statement claims that the developments strengthen continued cooperation on labor rights and governance and give EU-Bangladesh relations positive momentum.
