South Korea’s Kospi index tops 4,000 for first time

South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index topped 4,000 points on Monday for the first time, lifted by broader optimism over a potential US-China trade deal.

US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping are due to meet in South Korea this week, with top negotiators appearing to make progress towards a trade deal at talks in Malaysia.

The Kospi jumped more than 90 points, or 2.3 percent, to reach 4,031 in the first hour of trading.
