Another child dies in Aftabnagar gas explosion

A devastating gas explosion in Aftabnagar, Badda, has claimed another young life, bringing the death toll to four from a single family. Seven-year-old Mithila Akter succumbed to her injuries Friday night while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Mithila sustained 60 percent burns and severe respiratory tract injuries in the May 16 incident. “The child was being treated in the ICU, but her condition was extremely critical from the very beginning,” stated Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute.

Her father, Tofazzal (32), mother, Mansura (28), and younger sister, Tanjila Akhter (4), had previously died from injuries sustained in the same explosion.

The sole surviving family member, Mithila’s elder sister Tanisha, remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The fatal explosion occurred on the ground floor of a three-story residence near the South Anandanagar Ansar Camp, reportedly due to a gas leak.
