South Korean singer Wheesung found dead at 43

According to his management, South Korean singer Wheesung was discovered dead at home on Tuesday. Police are allegedly preparing to perform an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death for the 43-year-old.

According to local media, Wheesung, who had a number of successes in South Korea, including a well-known song of British singer Craig David’s “Insomnia,” was discovered unconscious in his apartment at 6:29 p.m. on Monday after his mother called for assistance.

Despite warning that “a significant amount of time” had passed since his death and requesting an autopsy, police informed local media they had not discovered any evidence of foul play.

According to Tajoy Entertainment, his management company, “Artist Wheesung has left us,” and the agency’s employees and colleagues were “in deep sorrow.”

This coming Saturday, he was supposed to play in the southeast city of Daegu with singer KCM.

Wheesung declared the forthcoming concert in his farewell social media post, writing: “Weight loss completed.” I’ll see you on March 15.

The chart-topping song “With Me” was among the many hit songs that made Wheesung prominent in the South since his singing debut in 2002. He was also highly recognized for his soulful performances.

However, in 2021, he was found guilty and given a suspended jail sentence for using propofol, a surgical anesthetic that is occasionally abused recreationally, which severely damaged his music career.

The 2009 death of music icon Michael Jackson was attributed to a cocaine overdose.

Fans and performers in South Korea lamented Wheesung’s untimely passing.

Rapper Verbal Jint honored him on Instagram, writing: “I’m grateful for every moment we shared together. You’ve put in a lot of effort. Peace be with you, Wheesung.

Another rapper, Paltoalto, thanked the veteran singer for fond memories, mentioning he went to see his first concert.

“It’s shocking and sad. I’m thankful for the music that accompanied me through the good memories of my youth,” he wrote on Instagram.

In a heartfelt comment on the artist’s last social media post, a fan said: “At your concert on December 23 last year, you told us to expect a lot from you, singing until you’re 60. I never thought that would be the last time I hear your voice… Goodbye, my idol, Wheesung.”

Last month, another South Korean actor, Kim Sae-ron, was found dead at her home aged 24.

A former child star, her career came to a sudden halt following a drunk-driving accident in 2022, after which she struggled to land new roles.
