As President Donald Trump considers lifting the aid freeze on the wartime ally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia on Sunday for negotiations with Ukraine.
Rubio will attend Group of Seven negotiations in Canada, the State Department also confirmed, becoming the highest ranking official to visit since Trump’s return. Trump has started a trade war with the US neighbor and disparaged its sovereignty.
In the talks from Monday through Wednesday in Jeddah, Rubio will discuss how to “advance the president’s goal to end the Russia-Ukraine war,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said, steering clear of pre-Trump phrasing of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
