Election Commission making preparation for polls in Dec: CEC

The Election Commission (EC) is preparing to hold elections in December, according to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today.

“Following the Chief Adviser’s announcement, we are making preparations for holding elections. The schedule will have to be announced in October if the national elections are to be held in December,” he said.

Addressing the charge handover ceremony of the newly elected committee of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Training Institute auditorium here as the chief guest, he said that it is not possible to hold local government polls by June.

“Although the Reform Commission has suggested that elections are possible in June, this will only be feasible if 1.6 million dead voters are not removed and new voters are excluded. The process of updating the voter list will be completed by June,” he added.

“We think the situation will stabilize by December,” the CEC said in response to a query regarding the state of law and order. As long as everyone works together, “We want to create a wave so strong that voting becomes the sole focus of the people.”

On February 9, Golam Rabbani, senior correspondent of Bangladesh Pratidin, and Kazi Jebel, special correspondent of Jugantor, were elected as the RFED’s general secretary and president, respectively.
