How Mexico is trying to avoid a migrant crisis under Trump

Ahead of another Donald Trump presidency, during which he has promised mass deportations, Mexico is frantically trying to avert a crisis at its border with the United States.

An estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, primarily from Mexico and Central America, reside in the United States, according to US officials.

In response to the migrant crisis and drug trafficking, Trump, who assumes office on January 20, vowed last month to impose punitive 25 percent taxes on goods from Mexico.

In an attempt to placate Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is blocking migrants from crossing the border between Mexico and the United States.

In her interview with Trump on November 27, she claimed to have described how her government’s approach involved migrant caravans being “attended to” prior to their arrival at the border.
