Trott stays on as Afghanistan coach after historic year

The cricket board praised Jonathan Trott’s “significant contributions” and announced that the former England batsman will continue to lead Afghanistan in 2025 after leading a historic season.

The 43-year-old South African was linked to the England position in July after Matthew Mott resigned as their white-ball coach, and he has since shown promise in the position.

Afghanistan advanced to the T20 World Cup semi-finals in June under Trott, who has been in command of the team since 2022.

They were in the World Cup final four for the first time.

“Afghanistan Cricket Board confirms the extension of the contract with Mr. Jonathan Trott, the national team’s head coach, for the year 2025,” the ACB said.

“The decision comes in after his successful 2.5-year tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team’s progress and development.”

Next year, Afghanistan will participate for the first time in the Champions Trophy, the top one-day tournament following the World Cup.

Due to “personal commitments,” Trott will not be present for T20s or Test matches during the all-format trip. His next assignment is a one-day series in Zimbabwe that begins next week, according to the ACB.
