Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser, today urged the European Union (EU) to move its visa offices for Bangladeshis from Delhi to Dhaka or any other nearby nation.
He made the call at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon here, where he was met by a 19-member EU team headed by Michael Miller, Head of the European Union’s team to Bangladesh.
Many students are unable to travel to Delhi to obtain visas for EU nations because of India’s restrictions on visas for Bangladeshis, the main adviser stated during the conference.
He claimed that as a result, there is now doubt over their academic futures and that European colleges are not accepting Bangladeshi students.
“If the visa office is shifted to Dhaka or any neighbouring country, both Bangladesh and the European Union will be benefitted,” he added.
As many as 15 EU diplomats presented their views in the meeting that lasted for two and half hours.
During the meeting, they discussed the commitments and actions of both sides in labour rights, trade facilitation, climate change, human rights, the International Crime Tribunal Act, Rohingya repatriation and building a sustainable future.
“We are celebrating victory throughout the month of December. I am very happy to participate in such an interactive discussion with you in the month of Victory,” Prof Yunus said.
He gave a brief overview of the 16 years of Awami regime tyranny, exploitation, enforced disappearances, and human rights abuses while honouring the victims and wounded in the July-August rebellion.
The principal adviser concentrated on the impact of money laundering and corruption on Bangladesh’s banking sector.
Prof. Yunus mentioned that false information is being widely disseminated against Bangladesh and asked the EU for assistance in putting an end to it.
He claimed that with the vast sums of money they laundered, dictator Sheikh Hasina and her allies, who were compelled to leave the country after the July upheaval, are attempting to destabilise the nation.
The chief advisor also mentioned about the exchange of views with representatives of different political parties and religious communities of Bangladesh held aiming to forge a national unity and maintaining communal harmony.
He also gave the EU representatives a thorough briefing on the electoral procedure and reforms of the interim administration.
Participating at the meeting, Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain stated that Bulgaria has already moved its visa centre for Bangladeshis to Vietnam and Indonesia. He called on other nations to adopt the same procedure.
The chief adviser in the reform process received complete support from the EU representatives, who also pledged to back him in his efforts to create a new Bangladesh by offering suggestions and guidance.
