After collecting two wickets in the second innings of the West Indies’ maiden cricket Test match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, Mehidy Hasan Miraz surpassed fellow all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to record the most wickets taken by a Bangladeshi bowler in an overseas match.
Miraz now has 85 abroad wickets, two more than Shakib Al Hasan, after taking these two wickets. To overtake the senior all-rounder, Miraz played 25 games, but Shakib took 83 wickets in 26 games.
In the away Test, however, Shakib took five wickets, two more than Miraz. In 15 and 14 away games, respectively, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and pacer Taskin Ahmed claimed 41 wickets.
However, Taskin’s career-best 6-64 against the second innings of the West Indies helped him reach 41. In 15 games, Mohammad Rafiqur has taken 34 wickets while playing away.
Taijul Islam had previously defeated Shakib in the home record match. In the South Africa series, Taijul’s home wicket total of 163 was surpassed by Shakib. At home, Taijul currently has 170 wickets. With 104 wickets, Taijul is ahead of Miraz.
Nevertheless, with 246 wickets in 71 games, Shakib is the leading wicket-taker for Bangladesh in Test cricket, even if he lost his home and away records to Taijul and Miraz, respectively. In 50 Test matches, Taijul has played 211 games, while Miraz has played 189 games thus far.
Taijul is the front-runner to win the title of Bangladesh’s top wicket-taker because Shakib will not be able to play Test cricket again.
