Court imposes travel ban on ex-army chief Aziz, wife

Due to accusations of graft, a court in this city today banned former army chief Aziz Ahmed and his wife Dilshad Nahar Kakoli from travelling.

The order was issued by Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Zaglul Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions, who granted the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) request.

The plea was submitted by ACC Deputy Director Md. Zakaria, and the court petition was brought before public prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir.

The case files reveal that the former army leader abused his position of authority, engaged in widespread corruption, and accumulated enormous riches in his and his family’s names. He is charged of starting companies in Malaysia, Singapore, and Dubai as well as money laundering overseas.

The ACC argued in its request that since the former army leader and his family members are attempting to flee the nation in order to avoid facing justice, a travel ban should be placed on them in order to trial them for their alleged crimes.
