The government press service was cited by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Thursday when it stated that Ukraine has no plans to renew its natural gas transportation agreement with Russia after 2024.
“The position of the Ukrainian side is clear: the transportation contract ends at the end of this year, we are not going to negotiate with the Russians and extend the contract,” the press service said.
Nonetheless, it stated that Ukraine can discuss using its gas transportation infrastructure with nations that are members of the EU.
In December 2019, Gazprom, the Russian gas behemoth, and Naftogaz, the state-run energy business in Ukraine, inked a gas transit agreement. According to the agreement, Ukraine would transport 40 billion cubic meters of Russian gas annually between 2021 and 2024.
Last year, Russia’s gas transit via Ukraine was down by 28.4 percent to 14.646 million cubic meters.
