In the Holey Artisan attack case, the High Court remitted the death sentences of seven militants to life in prison.
The decision was rendered today by the Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman bench.
Seven members of the outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh were given the death penalty on November 27, 2019, by a special tribunal in Dhaka, for their roles in the capital restaurant attack.
The convicts are – Rakibul Hasan alias Regan, Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi, Aslam Hossain alias Rash, Hadisur Rahman, Md Abdus Sabur Khan, alias Sohel Mahfuz, Mamunur Rashid Ripon and Shariful Islam Khaled. All these convicts are incarcerated now.
Twenty people were killed in the gruesome militant attack at Holey Artisan Bakery, including international nationals. The terrorists took the victims prisoner inside the café, then killed them with gunshots. Nine Italian nationals, seven Japanese, one Indian, and three Bangladeshis were among the dead.
That evening, while performing a rescue drive, two police officers lost their lives.
