The much-anticipated Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, which was built beneath the Karnaphuli River, will be officially opened on October 28 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
However, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel will be open for vehicular traffic starting on October 29, according to Bridges Division Secretary Md. Monjur Hossain, following today’s preparatory meeting for the event marking the opening of the tunnel.
He declared that the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel is a source of pride for the entire country, not just Chattogram.
“We can say that the tunnel has been prepared under the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
Terming the tunnel a national resource, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Tofail Islam asked all not to spread propaganda regarding the tunnel.
At the preparatory meeting, Project Director Harun-ur-Rashid said the tunnel is ready for vehicular movement.
Former Chattogram City Mayor and general secretary of Chattogram City Awami League AJM Nasir Uddin said a public rally is scheduled to be held at Anwara-point on the day of the inauguration.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address the rally as the chief guest, he added.
The tunnel will connect the proposed Asian Highway with Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway by reducing distance by 40km.
Bangabandhu Tunnel has been built spending Taka 10,374 crore.
