Flights were grounded on Monday as a result of Israeli airstrikes on the Aleppo airport in northern Syria, according to a military source quoted by the Syrian state news agency SANA.
“The Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression from the direction of the Mediterranean west of Latakia at about 4:30 am (0130 GMT) this morning, targeting Aleppo International Airport,” the source claimed, adding that this led to damage to the airport runway.
According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, Israeli Air Force airplanes launched missiles at Aleppo International Airport at around 4:30 a.m. from above the Mediterranean Sea, west of the Syrian coastal city of Latakia.
According to the report, the airport had to be temporarily closed due to the hits’ severe damage to the runway.
The airstrike did not result in any reported injuries.
The Aleppo airport would have been shut down for the sixth time in less than a year as a result of suspected Israeli bombings, following attacks of a similar nature in May 2023, two in March of this year, and one in September 2022.
Israel is reportedly focusing on Syria’s airports in an effort to stop Iran from increasingly using commercial planes to transport military supplies into the nation, which are then trucked into Lebanon for use by the Hezbollah terrorist organization.
