Authorities announced Saturday that at least 11 people were killed and three were missing when an illegally occupied structure collapsed in northeastern Brazil.
Firefighters were still searching for a lady and two children under the rubble in Paulista, a municipality in the state of Pernambuco, after the building collapsed on Friday.
According to a statement issued Saturday by the Pernambuco civil defense services, the dead include men, women, and children ranging in age from five to 45.
According to the report, a 65-year-old woman and two teens were rescued alive from the rubble.
According to authorities, the three-story structure, which was attached to a bigger housing complex, had been shuttered in 2010 owing to a risk of collapse but had been illegally occupied since then.
In April, a structure in identical condition fell in the Pernambuco city of Olinda, killing six people.
In Brazil, building collapses are most common in poorer districts where unlawful construction is prevalent.
After days of heavy rain, two irregularly constructed buildings in Rio de Janeiro’s disadvantaged neighborhood fell in 2020. Twenty-four persons were killed.
