German forces launch evacuation operation in Sudan

Swedish military will dispatch their own troops to facilitate the evacuation as German Bundeswehr troops have started evacuating embassy personnel. The pope has meantime urged a stop to the bloodshed.

According to the German Defense Ministry, the Bundeswehr, the German military, has started evacuation operations in Khartoum.

“The defense and foreign ministries are coordinating together an ongoing evacuation operation for German nationals [in Sudan] in consultation with our partners,” the ministry said in a tweet.

“Our aim is to fly out as many citizens from Khartoum as possible in this dangerous situation. As far as possible we will also take EU and other citizens with us,” the ministry added.

German military aircraft have already departed for Sudan, according to the German news agency DPA.

According to the German daily Bild, there were about 100 Germans on a jet that departed from Sudan and was headed for Jordan. It stated that two other aircraft were getting ready to evacuate additional citizens.

Germany has joined a host of other nations that have already begun evacuating diplomatic workers and their families, including the US, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
