The South Asian Organization for Regional Cooperation’s next secretary general will be Golam Sarwar, Bangladesh’s high commissioner to Malaysia, according to a decision made by the foreign ministry (SAARC).
After receiving the prime minister’s final approval, Sheikh Hasina would proclaim the candidate that Bangladesh had named as the official nominee.
Prothom Alo was told of this on Thursday by diplomatic sources.
According to sources, the ministry chose Golam Sarwar for the position despite numerous past and present diplomats expressing interest in it.
Former SAARC secretary general Abul Ahsan and QAMA Rahim were officials from Bangladesh.
According to a reliable source, Golam Sarwar’s name has been proposed in a summary for the PM’s sanction. After the PM approves the plan, information will be given to the SAARC secretariat.
He claimed that in order to accomplish this, other member nations’ opinions or consent are not required. The Bangladeshi candidate would take over as secretary general going forward.
Golam Sarwar, a career diplomat, entered the foreign ministry as a cadre officer of the 10th Bangladesh Civil Service in 1990. In addition to serving as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Sweden, he worked for the ministry in a variety of roles in Yangon, Kathmandu, Washington, DC, and Jeddah. Additionally, he served as the ministry’s director general for South-East Asia.
