Death of Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” films

The actor Robbie Coltrane, well known for playing Rubeus Hagrid, the groundskeeper at Hogwarts in the “Harry Potter” movies, has passed away.

According to Deadline, Robbie passed away at a hospital close to his Larbert, Scotland, home.

The distinguished actor had been unwell for the previous two years. He was 72.

The son of a doctor and a teacher, Robbie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 30, 1950. Following his graduation from Glasgow Art School, he pursued more art education at Edinburgh’s Moray House College of Education, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He began performing stand-up comedy in Edinburgh nightclubs and changed his last name to John Coltrane in honor of the jazz great when he transitioned to acting in London.

His early TV credits include ‘Flash Gordon’, ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Keep It in the Family’. His other comedy credits included series like ‘A Kick Up the Eighties’, ‘The Comic Strip’ and ‘Alfresco’ as he became a mainstay on British TV screens.
