The “Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand” project, which features 12 stargazing destinations or dark sky conservation areas spread across Thailand’s five regions, was launched by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT).
The Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand project was started in 2020 by TAT and NARIT with the intention of promoting dark sky travel, increasing public awareness of light pollution, and preserving peaceful and dark skies.
Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “We are promoting astronomy tourism or dark sky tourism as another new tourist experience, that is in line with the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign. Tourists who are fond of watching the stars, and astronomical phenomena like meteor showers and eclipses when they occur, can do so and combine this with other tourist attractions and activities at different locations around Thailand.”
NARIT has created standards for the listing of dark sky conservation areas in Thailand and supports the development of exceptional astronomy travel experiences through stargazing tours based on approachable information.
12 places around Thailand have been identified by the Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand initiative as meeting the requirements to be designated as dark sky conservation areas.
The listing is for a three-year period and is divided into three sections: Dark Sky Communities, Dark Sky Properties, and Dark Sky Areas in National Parks.
TAT has released a tour guide with suggested stargazing travel routes and all essential astronomical information in an easily understandable style as part of the Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand project.
