The Omicron coronavirus strain has been found in Bangladesh for the first time in two female cricketers who recently arrived from Zimbabwe.
After a meeting at Dhaka Shishu Hospital on Saturday, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque informed the journalists on the situation.
The samples of the two female cricketers were examined upon their arrival, and the findings came back positive for COVID-19.
After genome sequencing at the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research, they were both identified with the novel coronavirus variety (IEDCR).
Omicron was originally discovered on November 24 in southern Africa, and it quickly spread to other parts of the globe.
