June 1 is marked as World Milk Day every year to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. The particular day aims to educate people about the importance of milk and focus on activities that are connected to the dairy sector.
In 2001, the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations announced June 1 as World Milk Day.
The importance of milk is highlighted by FAO data that show more than 1 billion people’s livelihoods are supported by the dairy sector. It also states that dairy is consumed by more than six billion people globally.
The theme of the day of this year is “Sustainability in the dairy sector with messages around the environment, nutrition and socio-economics.”
Department of Livestock Services under Fisheries and Livestock Ministry will observe the day across the country, said a press release today.
As part of the observance, Milk Week will be observed from June 1 to 7.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim will formally inaugurate the programme of Milk Day and Milk Week 2021. As part of the weeklong programme, poor people will be fed milk-free, livestock offices will conduct a campaign to provide suggestions in dairy product diversification at the district and Upazila level, an exhibition of livestock will be arranged and a livestock treatment and vaccination campaign will be carried out and worm medicines for livestock will be distributed free.
