Anyone who ‘mocks’ the army will be punished in Pakistan

The Pakistani government is changing the law to punish those who disrespect and ridicule the country’s armed forces.

According to Pakistan’s influential media Dawn, the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved an amendment bill to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, 1898.

The proposed amendment provides that anyone found guilty could face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh, or both.

Faced with constant criticism from Pakistan’s opposition parties, the country’s military proposed amendments to the law.

In recent times, Pakistan’s opposition parties have ridiculed Prime Minister Imran Khan as the “elected Prime Minister” of the armed forces. Imran Khan has also been seen speaking on behalf of the country’s military most of the time.

There are also allegations that the Pakistani military played a direct role in Imran Khan’s becoming prime minister.
