ICC confirms arrest warrant for Philippine senator over Duterte drug war

A current Philippine senator and former enforcer of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war was the subject of an arrest warrant confirmed by the International Criminal Court on Monday. The senator sought sanctuary inside the Senate to evade capture.

Reporters were informed by recently elected Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano that the Senate was protecting Duterte’s former police commander, Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, “in accordance with our rules and Philippine laws.”

The ICC confirmed in a statement that the warrant displayed to the media by a former lawmaker was secretly issued and maintained under secrecy last November.
