State Minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam today appreciated the Baghdad for ensuring the welfare and safety of Bangladeshi nationals residing in Iraq amid the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region.
According to a news release from the ministry, she made the comments during a courtesy call from Dr. Wisam Hussein Ali Al Ithawi, the Charge d’Affaires of the Iraqi Embassy in Dhaka.
During the meeting, the state minister expressed concern over the continuing conflict in the Middle East and hoped for an early restoration of peace, stability and normalcy in the region.
The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation, manpower export, trade and regional issues, alongside ways to further strengthen economic engagement.
They also explored opportunities to expand trade and investment cooperation in pharmaceuticals, leather goods, ready-made garments, ceramics and agro-products.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Bangladesh-Iraq relations and enhancing cooperation in bilateral and multilateral forums.
The state minister also conveyed appreciation to the Iraqi leadership and government for felicitating the BNP-led government following its victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
Recalling the longstanding friendship between the two countries, Shama expressed gratitude to Iraq for recognising Bangladesh in 1972 as the first Arab nation to do so.
