Dhaka seeks justice over Florida student killings

Shama Obaed Islam, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, stated today that Dhaka anticipates that the perpetrators of the horrific murders of two Bangladeshi students in Florida would face justice after a thorough inquiry.

“This is extremely tragic. The body of the young man has been recovered, while the body of the young woman has not yet been found,” she told journalists at the foreign ministry here.

Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Brishti, two Bangladeshi PhD candidates at the University of South Florida (USF), were allegedly brutally murdered by another former USF student.

According to the state minister, Bangladesh is keeping in regular contact with the US State Department, the FBI, its embassy in Washington, and all other pertinent agencies about the issue.

Shama Obaed claimed to have spoken with both families and given them her word that the Bangladeshi government will do everything in its power to support them.

She stated that following an autopsy and other legal procedures, Limon’s remains will be returned home as quickly as possible.

“The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare is assisting in this matter, and we will also provide support regarding the other case,” she added.

Shama expressed optimism that the US authorities will carry out a thorough investigation and prosecute those accountable for the heinous murders.

In response to another query, she stated that Bangladesh anticipated the safe passage of its ships, notably the MV Banglar Joyjatra, via the Strait of Hormuz.

During her recent trip to Africa, the state minister stated that while communication with Senegal and Angola will be improved, Bangladesh would look into future energy cooperation with those nations.
