Bangladesh’s diplomatic success at UN: resolution on bioeconomy adopted

The 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), which ended on Friday in Bangkok, accepted a resolution on sustainable bioeconomy, which was started by Bangladesh.

Bangladesh spearheaded the historic resolution’s approval under the direction of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam.

According to a statement received here today, this accomplishment has reinforced Bangladesh’s increasing leadership in establishing the regional development agenda.

The resolution, titled “Supporting the Transition towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific,” was adopted with the unanimous support of member states – a recognition of Bangladesh’s diplomatic capacity in the region.

The resolution was in line with Bangladesh’s national priority – achieving sustainable, innovation-driven and inclusive growth. It emphasises economic transformation through circular economy, efficient use of resources, and application of science and technology.

The resolution also urges the Asia-Pacific region to work together more closely in order to share knowledge, develop capacity, draw in investment, and create sustainable bioeconomy value chains.

Speaking at the occasion, Faqir Mahbub Anam stated that the bioeconomy is not only a novel idea but also a practical means of addressing climate-related issues, boosting resilience, and guaranteeing inclusive growth.

Several nations, including India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan, have co-sponsored Bangladesh’s plan, demonstrating the regional consensus for sustainable development.

The session also adopted the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on “Strengthening Social Development to Build Inclusive Societies for All Ages”, which reaffirms the region’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable social development.
