Voters elect Mark Carney to succeed Trudeau as PM of Canada

Following his warning of “dark days” brought on by the United States under President Donald Trump, Mark Carney, a former central banker, was decisively elected prime minister by Canada’s Liberal Party on Sunday.

He accused a US president of “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses.” Carney swiftly adopted a tough position against the administration.

“We cannot let him succeed,” added the 59-year-old, who will take over from outgoing Liberal leader, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in the coming days.

Carney might not be employed for very long.

Although elections must be held in Canada by October, a snap poll may be held in a few weeks. The opposition Conservatives are the slight favorites according to current polls.

Carney cautioned that the Trump administration was attempting to take over Canada in his victory speech to a raucous assembly of party supporters in Ottawa.

“The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country,” he said.

“These are dark days, dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”

Trudeau’s former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, who served in a number of high-level cabinet posts in the Liberal administration that was initially elected in 2015, was handily defeated by Carney, who had previously served as the head of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.

Out of the roughly 152,000 votes cast, Carney received 85.9 percent. Only 8% of the vote went to Freeland.

Carney ran on a platform of opposing Trump.

The US president has repeatedly spoken about annexing Canada and thrown bilateral trade, the lifeblood of the Canadian economy, into chaos with dizzying tariff actions that have veered in various directions since he took office.

Delivering a farewell address before the results were announced, Trudeau said “Canadians face from our neighbor an existential challenge.”
