According to court filings filed this week, the FBI found more than 150 homemade explosives on a Virginia farm in what is believed to be the greatest discovery of its kind.
After receiving a tip from a neighbor that Brad Spafford, 36, was hoarding firearms and homemade ammo, agents searched his family home and discovered the explosives.
According to a court filing on Monday, Spafford, a machine shop employee, had professed support for political killings and used images of President Joe Biden as targets for target practice.
The paper stated that a rucksack containing several explosives deemed to be pipe bombs was discovered in a bedroom on the residence, which Spafford shares with his wife and two small children.
It added that Spafford’s freezer contained a jar of HMTD — a “highly unstable” explosive device — stored alongside food and labeled “Do Not Touch.”
His home also had a notebook of “recipes” for making explosives including grenades, according to the filing.
A neighbor told FBI agents that Spafford had discussed fortifying his property with “a 360-degree turret for a 50-caliber firearm on the roof.”
Spafford, who has already been charged with unlawfully possessing a rifle, is expected to face further counts related to the explosives, which each carry a potential penalty of ten years in jail, according to the prosecution.
Attorneys for Spafford said in a second filing on Tuesday that he is “a hard-working family man with no criminal record” and that he should be released from detention.
