Bangladesh Permanent Representative to UN elected ICSC member

In a fiercely contested election held on Friday at UN Headquarters in New York, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, was chosen to serve on the esteemed International Civil Service Commission (ICSC).

According to a news announcement received here today, the candidates from China and Bangladesh have won the election. Three candidates from China, the Republic of Korea, and Bangladesh were competing for two open seats in the Asia-Pacific area.

“This is the testament to the trust and confidence, the UN member States have in Bangladesh 2.0 under the able leadership of Hon’ble Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and a recognition of Bangladesh’s active role and contribution to the United Nations” said Ambassador Muhith after being elected.

From 2025 to 2028, he will be an ICSC member for four years.

With fifteen members, the ICSC is an independent expert body that was created by the UN General Assembly.

It is the primary body tasked with making choices and suggestions for the administration, pay, and benefits of the UN’s human resources.

In July 2022, Ambassador Muhith, a seasoned diplomat, became Bangladesh’s PR to the UN.

In addition to being the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS for 2024, he is now the Chair of the UNGA’s Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee).

Additionally, Ambassador Muhith was the President of the Executive Board of UN-Women, the Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS in 2022, and the Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
