British envoy calls on Chief Justice

British High Commissioner in Dhaka Sarah Cooke today paid a courtesy call on Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed at his office in the Supreme Court here.

The British envoy, during the meeting, lauded different initiatives take by the chief justice recently to institutionalize the freedom of judiciary. 

She hoped that the strong leadership of the chief justice will play an important role in ensuring justice and establishing good governance in the country.

Sarah Cooke also expressed her hope that measures such as creating a distinct secretariat for the judiciary, creating an independent commission to select judges for the High Court, and developing a policy on the appointment and transfer of judges of lower courts would all contribute to the modernisation of the judiciary.

She indicated interest in collaborating with Bangladesh on a number of bilateral judicial-related matters.

Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed assured the UK High Commissioner that Bangladesh’s judiciary is committed to upholding human rights and informed him of his commitment to establishing the rule of law in Bangladesh.

He also emphasized on the mutual cooperation between the both countries in the modernization of the judiciary of Bangladesh.
