Lady Gaga-mania as ‘Joker’ sequel brings pop star to Venice

The highly anticipated “Joker: Folie a Deux,” a dark and subversive film directed by Lady Gaga, will make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. The event will take place on the glamorous Lido.

The music sensation’s Venice debut may even surpass that of Brad Pitt and George Clooney, whose antics on the red carpet on Sunday before the release of their movie “Wolfs” were the talk of the elite festival.

By defying the conventions of the superhero movie, US director Todd Phillips’ 2019 “Joker” starred Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who was on the verge of mental collapse.

The picture, which was released in a grim Gotham City and was based partially on DC Comics characters, was a box office hit, earning $1 billion, but it also drew criticism for its violent tone.

Phoenix went on to win a Best Actor Oscar following its Venice Golden Lion victory.

However, Lady Gaga is the new star of Phillips’ follow-up, bringing the American singer back to the big screen following “House of Gucci” in 2021.

She portrays Harley Quinn, the Joker’s love interest and accomplice, whom Fleck meets while he awaits trial for his prior misdeeds.

“He is not ill. In a brief trailer for the movie that was released this week, her character can be heard saying in voice-over, “He’s perfect.”

According to Phillips, he sought to investigate the concept of identity in the follow-up by posing the query, “Where does the music inside him (Fleck) come from?”

“If we were going to do it, we knew we had to swing for the fences; we wanted to create something as crazy and fearless as Joker himself,” Phillips stated.

The singer of “Bad Romance” is scheduled to attend a press conference on Wednesday alongside Phoenix and the other cast members. Later in the day, she will be seen on the red carpet and at the world premiere of the movie.

“Joker: Folie a Deux” is one of the 21 movies competing for the Golden Lion, the world’s oldest film festival, at “La Mostra”.

Hollywood glamour has been abundant at this year’s event, as a lengthy number of A-level celebrities, including Nicole Kidman, Michael Keaton, and Daniel Craig, have spun about on the red carpet.

On Saturday, the event comes to a conclusion.
