Smith axed as Australia name T20 World Cup squad

Former captain Steve Smith and young player Jake Fraser-McGurk were left off of Australia’s T20 World Cup roster, which was announced on Wednesday.

The team will be captained by all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, while veteran opener David Warner has been selected for what looks to be his final international event.

“Mitchell has been an exemplary player and leader within the group for a long period of time,” said Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird.

Among the 15-man squad’s seasoned players are Test captain Pat Cummins, pacer Mitchell Starc, and explosive all-round batsman Glenn Maxwell, 11 of whom were involved in the team that won the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Following a decline in his limited-overs form, selector George Bailey stated that there had been “long conversations” regarding whether to put star batsman Smith in the side.

Bailey stated that the 22-year-old Fraser-McGurk, who has been batting brilliantly for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, would be closely monitored by selectors.

“Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign,” Bailey said.

June will see the United States and the West Indies host the Twenty20 World Cup.

Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup team:
