Today, a special court in this place prolonged the bail time granted to Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Laureate and Chairman of Grameen Telecom, along with three other individuals, until May 23. The case involves them being accused of breaking labor laws.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus came in court and requested permanent bail in the matter, and Judge MA Awal of the Labour Appellate Tribunal issued the ruling.
Dr. Yunus’s plea was moved by lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun, and the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) was represented by senior counsel Khurshid Alam Khan.
On January 1, 2024, the 3rd Labour Court of Dhaka found and sentenced Nobel Laureate and Chairman of Grameen Telecom Dr. Muhammad Yunu, as well as the company’s director and former managing director, Md. Ashraful Hasan, and members of the board of directors, Nur Jahan Begum and Md. Shahjahan, to six months in prison in a case brought under the labor law.
On the condition that they file an appeal against their conviction, the court did grant the four convicted individuals a one-month interim release.
On September 9, 2021, DIFE Inspector Arifuzzaman filed a complaint alleging violations of labor rules, including failing to establish a welfare fund for laborers and failing to regularize 101 staff members.
